It's amazing that any copies that nice exist because so few were being collected at that point.

I mailed two additional 9.0/9.2 file copies copies to CGC this morning.

This means by Thanksgiving that I will have personally slabbed 4 of the 11 Western Publishing File Copies discovered and auctioned by Heritage back in 2005,

and I own a 5th one -- the current 9.0 highest.

At least I know there are 6 more potential NMs out there from that file copy stash.

Applause

After two years of finding and submitting _four_ NM 9.4 copies of Magnus # 46 to CGC I _finally_ got a worthy one.

Those two copies I reference above? I graded one as a 9.0 and the other as a 9.2.

Final grades?

8.5 and 9.6 (new single highest -- and technically only graded copy over 9.0, despite the fake 9.4 listed on the census)

I officially don't get it and really am beginning to believe CGC's a crap shoot.

A CBCS 9.4 comes back as an 8.0, and a book I grade as 9.2 *at best* comes back a 9.6.

Still, I'm ecstatic.

After Magnus # 29, # 46 is by far the hardest issue of Magnus to find in 9.0 or above.

I'm now missing just two books below 9.4 for my Magnus set -- # 33 & 37.

Are you going to pursue variants? You might as well. I believe there are some white vs. yellow logo box variants on the later ones.

Yes to variants!

I've completed the full set of Mexican (Spanish language) reprints, # 1-28, and I have maybe 25% of the Dutch reprints.

I've got one $.15 price variant somewhere, but it's probably a 7.0.

And you actually flagged the Whitmans to me. I've never found one better than Fine, but:

As for CGC copies to slab, the Whitmans are next (# 35-46). If I find any 8.5 or better, it's on.

They need more members here:

http://fccforeigncomics.boards.net/

You should post your foreign variants there.

CGC _finally_ posted the grades of my slowest-ever submission yesterday.

I submitted:

Magnus 33 (raw)
Magnus # 34 (CBCS 9.6)
Doctor Solar # 5 (CBCS 9.0)

way back on July 3 ( Suprised ) for pre-screening, pressing, and grading.

That's July 3-Dec. 19 and I _still_ don't have the books in hand.

But I'm happy with the grades:

Magnus 33 - CGC 9.4 (highest -- supplants my copy of 9.0 as the lone highest-graded one)
Magnus 34 - CGC 9.2 (cites a tear on the back)
Doctor Solar # 5 - CGC 9.2 (SUPER tough book in grade. Tied for highest-graded and worth $500+)

This puts me one step closer to having a true NM (9.4 or better) set of Magnus # 1-46.

The only remaining book below 9.4 is # 37 (a lowly 9.2).

Thanks, man.

I honestly don't think CGC's discriminating against CBCS books; I do think CGC's a crap shoot.

In this thread alone you can see I've gotten 9.6 books come back as 8.0s and 9.0 books come back as 9.6.

The thing is, I'm now nearly finished with my Magnus set and after six years of focused collecting, that's an amazing feeling.

My set averages 9.6, with one exception has a floor of at least 9.4, and as of today I've got the highest-graded copy of 39 of 46 issues.

With only 10 issues in existence that would be upgrades.

I'll continue to look out for a few select 1970s issues in the wild to submit, but I set out in 2011 to build a world-class Silver Age run and I've basically done so.

On a totally different note, I'm 7 issues away from a solid 9.0+ run of Doctor Solar 1-31 as well, and 6 of those 7 issues are on the market this month alone in CGC 9.4 or better.

All are overpriced and I'm broke until at least January, but if I had $800 to spare I could complete that set in average 9.3 in one swoop, content to forever be in the # 2 registry slot.

And the only reason I started in on Doctor Solar four years ago was because Magnus upgrades were drying up.
