I'm trying to figure out what mainline ASM McFarlanes should go for. Anyone know?

My problem is there are several variables to consider. Among them, 298-300 are clearly worth tons more than the other books; 301-312, 315-317 are far scarcer than 318-325, etc.

And grading. 9.6-9.8 candidates? Easily worth $4-5 a piece. But if they're 8.5-9.2? Suddenly only worth $1.50-2.

And then shipping messes me up.

For instance, I'd probably pay $3 instantly for any McFarlane ASM in NM, more for 298-302, 312, and 315-317. But would I pay $4 in bulk for numbers out side of those? Unclear. At $6 per, no.

But there's a guy whose got 40 copies of non-key McFarlanes available for $4 per. Worth it? Could maybe flip for $7 per in person (at a con), but shipping kills the possibility of selling on eBay for more than $4 per.

And I'm pretty much resigned that the only way I'll ever be able to afford a 300 again is in a bulk buy of a set.

It's a great run of 29 books that I'd love to accumulate a short box of one day. I may even have 40 copies or so total (including 5x 304-307) stashed away already.

And our very own Ferdelance showed me a handful of his the other day, including 3-6 copies each of 315 and 328.

So let's watch McFarlanes over the next month and try to determine average price individually vs. in sets, so i should know what to be paying. (Note, I'm thinking ASM 302-314 only).

This is a great idea Rai. One of the first collections I worked on when I had a source of income was Todd McFarlane's and Eric Larson's Amazing run. That stuff was just gold. It was one of the earliest runs I can recall at 10 being interested in owning and actively seeking out although each issue back than was more like $15-25 at conventions IF you could find them.

I believe the next most valuable set from Todd's run is the #315-317. Basically his second take on Venom and Venom's first full cover apperances. It was BBMM's idea that these books were the ones to chase when he was still posting on these forums and I'm convinced he was right. Especially since the latest round of CGC 9.8 copies of the issues are slowly becoming more expensive.

In the day's of the internet I would pay $3 max for confirmed NM copies of the books #301 - #319. Because 1) I already have them in duplicates in my collection and 2) because eBay makes this set so easy to get. Around #320 they get to be pretty common because his popularity had skyrocketed about that time and everyone, including my childhood friends, had latter issues. I'd probably only pay $1.50 for confirmed NM copies after #319.

I'll start watching Rai. Thumbs Up

Good stuff, Whet.

I _still_ think my run's incomplete, as I've never owned 298-299, 301-303, and I don't even think I've got a copy of my favorite cover, 313 (Lizard).

As y'all know, I started collecting the summer of 1989, with Batman Year 3 and Marvel's Acts of Vengeance (Jim Lee regular start on Uncanny with 256 and Cosmic Spidey/ ASM 326-328).

So my childhood nostalgia runs to Batman 400-450, Uncanny 250-300, ASM 298-365 (including the McFarlanes I couldn't then afford), and New Mutants 85-100 (I mowed lawns for a summer to complete my Liefeld run).

So now, 22 years later, I'd love to stockpile raw 9.6-9.8 copies of the above (even though I still have most), and/or was flirting with the idea of trying for a long Marvel copper run in CGC 9.8 white.

The challenge in completing a set like Spec. Spiderman 1-100, Web of Spider-Man, X-Factor, New Mutants 1-100, Miller Daredevil, or McFarlane Hulk or ASM isn't in the keys, but the token low-print run issues.

IE, it's easy to get Hulk 340 (262 slabbed in 9.8). Much harder? # 343, with only 7 slabbed in 9.8.

ASM 300? 307 copies in 9.8. But # 301? Just 46. # 325? Just 36.

But, just for a coolness factor, it'd be fun to buy a set of something like New Mutants 1-100 or Spec. Spider-Man 1-100 in 9.8 and hold for 15 years. It's not yet cost prohibitive, and could prove a great investment and project as the true NM+ Copper books get scarcer. You could even start swapping them out for signature series to make it tougher.

My problem is I feel like I'd get 20-30% of the way there and quit, distracted by other collecting goals.

I've currently got 10 different collecting streams:

1) Black Terror 1-26
2) Fighting Yank 1-29
3) Exciting Comics (the 47 Black Terror covers)
4) Superman 60-100 in slabbed 4.0-6.0
5) Our Army at War 81-100 in slabbed 5.0-6.0
6) All American # 17-25
7) Batman # 3-20 in slabbed 4.0-6.0
8) Gold Key Valiant (early Magnus, Solar, Turok).
9) Justice League 1-10
10) Batman 426-429 in 9.8 (done, but now chasing 9.8 Starlin and/or Mignola Signature Series upgrades).

Too many wants and not enough cash as it is...

A lot of those books you mentioned are rare in 9.8 not because they are hard to find but because so few people have turned a profit from CGCing them to justify slabbing. You could keep looking for Todd's Amazing Spider-Man CGC 9.8's run on eBay or ComicLink or you could hit the CGC forums and ask to buy extremely high graded copies for $5 a pop and attempt to CGC the books yourself. Maybe your passion and drive to get this collection done will cause others to take notice and drive prices up. We've seen that in the past on the CGC forums with early Turtles and Nedor Super Heroes.

Since the 25 year old rule seems to hold true thus far, you could possibly just wait a few more years until the popularity of the run and it's demand cause more 9.8's to surface but the prices will be a bit more taxing on your bank account to accumulate them. Akin to Neal Adam's Batman run.

I do hold a lot of respect for the books you defined below because they represent my childhood too and I think it was one of those amazing times in comics that every child from that period remembers fondly and thus makes me believe the demand and the desire will be there. I definitely don't mind stocking up on more Todd Amazing, Lee X-Men or Liefield New Mutants.

Bare minimum at the moment in my mind is to watch and record.

That's an extremely demanding want list. Smile I know a guy who has a Solar #1 from the early Gold Key Valiant era. I think it was a 6.0. Think

You need to start getting your best copies CGC'ed. These things go for tons of $$'s. Plus they are just cool as hell. Thumbs Up

This might be my next collection focus in the Copper Age. (Getting them CGC'ed that is) Think

Wow, I am lucky that I'm able to contain myself and not go for original art now that I have no Spidey issues to buy. Otherwise that would be on my list. That is awesome.

I've been just recently started to chase the Amazing Spider-Man #315, 316 and 317 books in CGC 9.8. Although I'm cheap so I haven't won any yet but at least we know that they won't go below $50 because otherwise I'll be snapping them up left and right! Very Happy

Until than I'm going to start working on the other Todd books in this amazing run.
